My personal opinion is that you should only create a website for a product if you can and want to offer detailed information about it. Usually, if you have a physical product, like a chair or a painting, I would say posting that to large websites like Amazon and Ebay is a better choice that creating a website only for that. Ebay and Amazon have everything set up for you, they're well-known by millions of users worldwide, they let you upload photos of your product, add descriptions, set the price level, offer a discount, have an auction feature, and of course they have a secure payment method. Both of this large online stores have contracts with shipping companies so you get that cheaper too if you use their service.

On the other hand, having a separate website for your product does offer some exclusivity, because you can provide users with more details about the product -- more than what's possible on eBay and Amazon. You can even post videos there or add a FAQ section about the usage of the product, plus you can have a more detailed explanation of terms and conditions, which clients agree to when they buy your product.

Usually, separate websites should be created for products that are not physical, like services [if you can these products :)] where there are different packages, like in case of a mobile carrier, or a website hosting company.

Besides putting in a little bit of extra effort, there are no downsides to doing both. If your business is already well-established, setting up a website can help you extend your reach and ultimately build your brand reputation.

Amazon and eBay are the first places people go to search for products they're interested in. They're eCommerce giants that won't only help you market and sell products, these platforms can put you on the map by introducing your products to people who might not know you exist. Besides offering a platform for making direct sales, you can use your product listing on these eCommerce sites to link back to your site for more information. Ultimately, they'll drive more traffic to your site, improve your search rankings, and help you achieve your sales and marketing goals. Doing both is a win-win.

If you do plan to do both, you might want to post on eCommerce sites first, since it won't take much time and effort to do so. All you have to do now is to make sure that your site is ready for potential visitors. If you don't already have one, and you don't have in-house staff that can put one up for you, you can try working with freelance designers and developers to do it for you.
