We (NASA) need to develop a number of high resolution 3D models to be used for Robonaut simulations. These 3D models are to be developed based on photographs of real items (see attached files). These simulated objects would be used for various grasp and manipulator testing.

This particular challenge is to build a 3D model of a small soft goods box. This is a copy of an item that was shipped up to the Space Station with R2. This is representative of possible small soft goods objects that may be a part of R2's tasks on the ground or on station. It will be used to develop vision and grasping controls to increase R2's ability to interact with non-rigid, compliant objects in its workspace.

There is a scale in the attached imagery is in inches. All final model submissions must be delivered in on of the following formats: .prt (Solidworks, ProE); .step or .stp; .iges; .stl; .dae. NOTE: Freelancer submissions will need to be image file views of your model. If you win the contest, you will then send/transfer the model files to NASA via email, dropbox, etc.

All entries will be judged on the accuracy, quality, and fidelity (detail) of the model produced. Note that where highly similar top submissions are produced, the submission entered first will win.

Maybe due to the fact that English is not my native language, I could really use some further explanation or re-phrase on the following part of the briefing: "It will be used to develop vision and grasping controls to increase R2's ability to interact with non-rigid, compliant objects in its workspace." If something like that is against your policy, then please accept my apologies for asking!

  No apologies necessary. We are going to be using a virtual environment to develop and test algorithms for identifying and grasping tools. There is a bit more to it, but that is basically why we are having objects from the physical testbed virtualized. Great question! Thanks for your interest.
