Sumarul concursului

LoneAlarm wants YOU to design the next generation of smart walking stick! We're searching for designs that can improve the quality of life for people who require a walking aid.

Our cutting-edge technology is embedded in the handle of the walking stick to collect data that can enhance the user's care. We're looking for designs that are not only functional but also stylish and desirable, making our smart walking stick an accessory that users can be proud to own.

The ideal design should be ergonomic, lightweight, height-adjustable for people between 146cm and 193cm tall, and able to support up to 130kg. It should be easy and intuitive to assemble single-handedly by individuals with physical and/or cognitive impairments and easy to pack and unpack, allowing it to be shipped by post in Australia, Canada, US, and UK.

We want a design that is easy to manufacture and suitable for drop-shipping from distribution warehouses directly to end customers. The product and packaging should be fully recyclable, and the handle should be made of RF transparent plastic, incorporating space for LoneAlarm's electronics and an upward-facing clear window (10mm x 10mm) for the pulse oximetry sensor.

Your entry should include 3D sketches of the walking stick and drop-ship packaging and a narrative showing how the design meets the required product attributes.

We're offering a cash prize of $AU300 for what we and our focus group think is the best design. The successful entrant will work with LoneAlarm to incorporate our technology into the design and produce Minimum Viable Product prototypes of the smart walking stick.

Join us in our mission to create a revolutionary smart walking stick that will change lives!

We are interested in a design concept. The pcb and other components ar enot relevant to what you are doing. The handle of the walkign stick needs to fit a persons hand properly (ergonomic). We wil ltailor the other aspects of the design to the user. If you are not sure how big a walking stick handle is go out and find a walkign stick and measure it (about 24mm wide frm experience)

Good modular start. I'd like to see where your design goes.
You don't need the bump for batteries or electronics.
We can even use flexible PCB's and wrap te electronics around the inside of the handle or stick. The only necessities are the sensor contacts wit the user.

Please check the updated information and comments.

Dear CH you have mentioned grill feature, this may prone to water entering into the module - under rainy condition or dropping into some watery places. Is that OK ?

Sound in and out is a problem. We would put a membrane behind the grill or use an IP6x rated speaker and microphone. It needs to be OK if people take it out walking in the rain or into the shower. Not intended to be submerged.

That too after the contest is over and my design got rejected. Noob question : Sealed entries need money, right?

    Givens:
    1. The pulse oximetry sensor (MAX30102) needs to be as close to the user as possible (preferably touching).
    2. The Ag and AgCl electrodes need to touch the skin. The Ag electrode will be bonded to the temperature sensor on the board.
    3. There is probably a torch function. We have had good feedback from users and nursing homes about torches in walking sticks and negative feedback about the need to change batteries.
    4. There will be fall detection (see lonealarm.com)
    5. There will probably be a microphone and speaker for a speakerphone capability for emergency response to a fall. We use this in some of our current elder care products along with video monitoring. The carers like it as the can triage what has happened without the need to immediately attend on site. The patients tend to be a bit confused about where the sound comes from.
    6. The device will operate for at least a week between charges (more likely a month)
    7. Should be at lease IP55 rated

    Entry #5 @tahamirhasan
You appear to have hit all aspects of the design brief. My issues:
    1. the handle will break where the handle enters the triangular metal staple. Lots of torqe on the joint with 130kg pressing down on it
    2. the handle and the pole will get separated and one will get lost

    • acum 11 luni
    1. tahamirhasan

      • acum 11 luni

      1. The handle will not break, here's what I can do to solve the issue. The focus will be to transfer the load properly to the staple. We can modifiy the staple design so that force-train does not create the twist at the 90 degree section. We can extend the staple in the lower triangle side so that it acts as an exoskeleton while keeping the looks good and manufacturing easy.

      2. The handle and pole will not get seperated we will add snaps or machine screws to assemble the handle with pole. This is an initial design of the concept. So we can actually work with the details and finally do a FEA analysis before going into prototyoing.

Hi people, thanks for the entries so far. I've uploaded a cross section of our current handle concept. Apat from the electronics design and software this is seriously as far as we have gotten (hence the design contest). We have breadboarded the design for software development. We haven't laid out the PCB as it needs to fit into the handle. It gives you more options to play with.

Finally these handles are actually quiet comfortable but we have to stock left and right handed and several sizes for different sized users.

Re. radicalness. We want it to be fit for purpose, ergonomic and look different to anything else on the market.

This is the most interesting one we have found. Note the durable foot. They pack to 108x108x430mm which is 100mm to long for economic shipping.

Mechanism is on a board in the handle and has an upward facing IR pulse oximetry sensor that shines light into the users palm when they are holding the stick. It also has two electrodes flush with the top of the handle that measure galvanic skin response and body temperature. The rest of the sensors and electronics are on the board. The battery goes down the top of the shaft with a RF proximity charging coil in the tip of the stick so it can recharge by being placed into a charge cradle. That's our idea. Aluminum is good for recycling but has weight and RF issues. Carbon fiber is good for weight and RF but has recycling issues. Wood would be great but how to manufacture in bulk? Note it's not a stick to help blind people navigate, it monitors elderly and disabled people's vital signs. We want to hear your idea, we know the problems with ours.
