This is the foundation for everything else. A rock star executive assistant (EA) wants to serve—not just the company or organization. A rock star, EA wants to serve and be the right hand of the CEO. No matter the task, I achieve my goals by helping the CEO achieve theirs. I am a natural leader. I consider myself an air traffic controller. I enjoy coordinating resources and people to progress projects and initiatives to completion continually. I am trusted to act on behalf of the CEO all day long. I have personalized expertise. A rock star EA is like a second brain. I know what the CEO likes and dislikes. I know where they are and where they need to go. I know when to schedule meetings and when not to. A rock star EA will gather as much of this information as possible as early as possible—and proactively keep learning. I am the master of the calendar. In business, we live and die by the calendar. Deadlines, appointments, meetings, presentations, calls—the calendar is the flight plan that keeps all these moving parts from crashing into each other. I anticipate needs. A rock star EA already sees what an executive needs and plans accordingly. If it is lunch before a meeting or reports emailed to a client, I have already seen the need and addressed it. Anyone can take direction, but a rock star is already moving and has it handled. I prioritize the personal. I know that protecting your personal time lets you maximize your professional time. A rock star EA knows that and helps guard that time. The term “calendar czar” is about right, which is exactly what you know is needed. I respect confidentiality. A rock star EA will have all sorts of personal information and access. It is critical that I have integrity and a sense of discretion. I have exceptional communication skills. A rock star EA will help facilitate communication in the organization. Whether it is email, calls, or other communication, a rock star EA will accelerate response times and keep the messages moving. A positive disposition. I focus on what is possible and controllable. Constraints are an opportunity for creativity and problem-solving. I am tech-savvy. I am not in IT, but I am unafraid to figure out how to make the tools that I use do what I want or seek out what technology is needed to get the job done. In 1988, I earned a BS in Mathematical Sciences and an MBA with a double emphasis in finance and management in 1994. I attended the US Coast Guard Academy for undergraduate study and served nearly 10 years of active duty. Following my military service, I became a Financial Advisor with Ameriprise Financial for 13 years. In 2011, I started my Executive Assistant career.
