I've done hands-on work converting scanned and printed mesh files into parametric solids, so I know the gap between an STL and a proper solid is usually more about clean surfaces than it is about the file format itself. On one recent job I rebuilt a set of printed housings from STL scans of legacy parts. The meshes had thousands of tiny facets and open edges where the scanner had struggled, so after converting to solid I had to patch and re-knit the faces before anything would thicken cleanly. That's often the real work hiding inside a "simple" conversion. I'd usually start by inspecting the mesh in Solidworks to check how watertight it is, then use surface repair and feature recognition to rebuild it as a proper solid body. From there I'd add tooling draft and check for undercuts so the part can actually come out of a mold. Since half the work is already done, would it be worth a short call to walk through where you've got to and what draft the tooling needs?
