Identify and critically discuss the major economic, political and environmental forces shaping tourism development in a number of destinations. Assignment Instructions Once you have identified an appropriate academic paper please read it carefully and provide a brief outline and synopsis of the content. In particular you should demonstrate the key contributions made by the author(s) to our understanding of tourism development and/or sustainable tourism. In your answer you should briefly reflect upon the principal strengths and weaknesses of their approach taking care to compare and contrast with the work of other major writers. Structure You have been asked to produce a short reflective analysis of an academic paper. In your critical review you must consider the following (these are not sub-headings!): Identify and justify your choice of academic paper (how and why is it relevant?) A brief outline of the main theoretical assumptions on which the author’s/authors’ argument is/are grounded Outline the key concepts developed in the work and how these have been applied. Indicate how the work has contributed to the understanding of tourism development/sustainable tourism. To compare and contrast with the work with the work of others, highlighting key areas of agreement and disagreement. In order to effectively tackle this assignment you must ensure that you keep up-to-date with all the designated reading for weeks 1-8 and the ideas/material discussed during lectures and seminars. Your ability to do well in this assignment will also be enhanced through further background reading in the tourism development literature. You may reference other work in your summary.
