Load estimation: Describe all the worst-case loading conditions that you can think of. Describe the nominal operating loading condition as well. Consider both static and dynamic loads. Defend your decisions.
Failure modes: A failure mode is a description of a failure that is likely
to occur in a component or assembly under a specific loading scenario. Describe all the different ways in which the drill could undergo mechanical failure. Consider failures related to strength, stiffness, stability, or other effects. Consider all load types: tension, compression, shear, bending, and torsion, and combinations. You must describe at least two failure modes for each part analyzed.
Load analysis: identify the worst case loading
scenario in the most likely failure mode. This is the condition under which you will complete the remainder of the analysis. For this step, draw a free body diagram, consider both static and dynamic loads. To do this well, you will require characterization of the most severe usage scenarios, power source(s), losses, and loads. Clearly list all assumptions made.
Static failure analysis: Perform a static failure analysis on the part,
using the failure theories. The outcome of the analysis should be
an answer to the following question: “Under the chosen failure mode and loads, will the part fail under the static loads? If yes, at what load? If not, what is the factor of safety guarding against failure?”
Dynamic failure analysis: Perform a dynamic failure analysis on
the part, using the failure theories. The outcome of the analysis
should be an answer to the following question: “Under the chosen failure mode and loads, will the part fail under dynamic loads? If yes, under which conditions of mean and amplitude loads? If not, what is the factor of safety guarding
