After my proofing pass the text is effectively clean, but the number that matters is not the average: it is what happens to the characters that cannot be recovered from context. Letters inside words can be fixed by reading the sentence. Digits, dates, sums, surnames and place names cannot: there is no context that tells you whether a figure is 1500 or 7500, and a confident guess there is worse than a gap, because you cannot tell it apart from a correct reading later. So my rule: anything I cannot read with certainty stays marked in place as [?] with the page and line, and comes to you as a short list.
