Drawing on the material covered in the reading assignment, write a 500- to 750-word essay in which you do the following: Identify a “secondary group” (p. 10) in which you are presently a member and about which you think you have a reasonable degree of familiarity. Classify the group as one of the seven types (activity, personal growth, educational, problem-solving, quality control circles, self-managed work groups, or top management team) discussed on pp. 11-14 in Effective Group Discussion. Make clear your reasons for classifying it as such. Discuss the extent to which the group exhibits the characteristics of a “system,” which are covered on pp. 56-64 and summarized on p. 61 in Figure 3.1, and the ethical qualities that Galanes and Adams mention on pp. 15-18 of Chapter 1. Consider how the characteristics in evidence may have affected your attitudes toward the group. In preparing the essay, be sure that you cite examples that clearly pertain to and illustrate the characteristics you note. Expected Outcome If you do this assignment well, your reflection on the group you have chosen should reveal to you some of the reasons for its successes and/or failures, why you value or do not value your membership, and also something about the role that communication plays in respect to both. Such understanding will provide a good foundation for the next assignment, The Nature of Communication, as well as a basis for anticipating potential problems you may experience as you later move into the group work associated with the course. 2. Think of some experience you have had (preferably in a group situation) in which you came away feeling, “We just were not communicating.” Write a short account of the experience in which you first describe what happened that led you to think that communication was not occurring or, at least, not occurring as you would have liked and then, drawing on the material covered in Chapter 2 of Effective Group Discussion, offer plausible reasons for the breakdown or failure. Did the problem appear to be a result of the ways in which the parties involved were forming and transmitting messages, poor listening, or a combination of both? Develop your account in sufficient detail at either the content or relational level and with enough specific illustrations that a person with no knowledge of the situation could read your account and say to him- or herself, “Well, that makes sense. I can easily see why these people failed to communicate successfully.” You should be able to complete this assignment in 250 to 500 words. Expected Outcome Carefully reading the material in Chapter 2 of Effective Group Discussion and applying it to the situation you have chosen for your submission should make you more sensitive to the communication realities of everyday life and appreciative of the complex nature of human interaction. Often we attribute what we perceive to be failures in communication to the deliberate unwillingness of one or more of the parties to communicate. This is sometimes the case, but in most instances, such a view represents a gross oversimplification. When we understand that successful communication is almost always complicated, we are on the road to becoming better at it.
