ROCK ‘N’ ROLL’S NOT-SO-SILENT HISTORY WITH HEARING LOSS
Rock and Roll is a music genre that originated in the United States during the late 1940s. The popular music genre has since evolved from the late 1940s and early 1950s when it was originated, to became a well recognized and appreciated music genre. Rock and Roll originated from various other African American music genres such as Rhythm And Blues, Boogie Woogie, Jump Blues, Gospel, Jazz and also Country music.
Over the years, Rock and Roll and been greatly linked with hear loss, as it history shows that many popular Rock and Roll musicians have suffered from hear loss and some have even seen their music careers come to an end because of hear problems suffered due to the exposure of very loud music.
Hearing loss occurs when there is a reduced ability for one to hear sound. Ear loss can most times graduate into deafness, which is the complete inability for an individual to hear sound. Studies have shown that deafness and hearing loss can be caused by many factors and it is not restricted by age, race or location. Deafness and hearing loss could be as a result of a complication of a virus, because of a disease, injury or even nerve damage. Nerve damage and injuries by noise is a major cause of hearing loss and deafness, especially for musicians who have to be exposed to such loud sounds for a prolonged period of time.
Nerve damage and injuries by noise leads to sensorineural hearing loss. The happens when there is a damage to the inner ear of an individual or there is a damage to the nerves responsible for sending sound to the brain. Sensorineural hearing loss usually becomes permanent and would most likely lead to deafness.
Causes of sensorineural hearing loss includes exposure to loud noise from sources, in the case of Rock and Roll, it is from amplified music that these musicians are exposed to. The louder the noise they are exposed during a long period of time, the higher the risk of developing sensorineural hearing loss. It is the most common cause of hearing loss for people exposed to excess noise especially at concerts, nightclubs, loud music headphones and music louder speakers.
