From your description, I assume that you want these things to run as SQL commands. This is not a problem for the NULL update. I can write this for every column as a query, it's either an UPDATE or a DELETE depending on if a default is available. Regarding the duplicate check. Do you provide the fields that should be deduplicated? All rows should have a different id, and possibly other fields might be different. Finding duplicates will then be a nasty join ...

So I would move those links onto the row we keep before removing anything.
