Hi, This is a simple project that can be done in 1-2 days. I have working with photo diode when I have to built line follower robot back in 2012. for your case, If it seems that the output of photodiode sensor is quite low, we can use non inverting op amp to amplify it. then we can use it as input to atmega8 ADC. This kind project is my daily activity. I'm assuming you have a prototype and you are looking for help selecting production parts and putting together a final schematic.
