Hi, I have significant experience in MATLAB. And your project seems straightforward so shouldn't be a problem! I am currently doing my Masters in Geophysics from LMU Munich (Top 30 University Globally!) I did my Bachelor in Earth and Space Sciences (literally Rocket Science!) also from Germany earlier this year. Geophysics in academia is mostly about performing complex scientific computations to develop and constrain models and design and run simulations. And of course MATLAB is the most dominant tool for all kinds of numerical analysis. Lots of models in geophysics incorporate properties of materials, for example, in seismic simulations, calculating properties of the medium/material through which a wave is propagating is essential to understand the structure of the subsurface under investigation.
