42207 Linux-Apache Security Scanner

I lease a dedicated Linux/Apache/cPanel server from a great provider, FastServers.net. They do an excellent job administering security for the server software. However, administering security for individual applications, like commercial and custom PHP and Perl CGI code, is my responsibility. The recent outbreak of the "Linux Lupper Worm" brought the issue of application security (vs. server security) back to the forefront for me. From a practical standpoint, I just can't afford to manually search through every directory on the server on a regular basis, searching for application software, checking to make sure versions are up date (if commercial softwaer), and checking for vulnerabilities. I can't imagine *any* server admin in my situation being able to do a sufficient job at this task without using some sort of automatic software solution. It just takes *way* too much time. Unless the company is large enough to hire a dedicated server security person or team, they *have* to be able to rely on some sort of automated tools. This project is a request for consulting on how to answer these two questions: 1.) Are there open source or commercially available software applications that could run with a regular cron that can scan for applications software. 2.) If there are no available resources (I can't imagine this is possible) what would be the scope of the project to code up a custom solution? Again, I can't grok that, with many thousands of server admins in my situation, a number of automated solutions aren't already available. The purpose of this project is to locate an expert-level Scriptlance provider that can point me to existing resources--assuming they're available--and possibly, assist in installing, configuring, testing, and supporting the application.
