Sociology Autobiography

This course is designed to provide a broad overview of and introduction to the field of sociology and how social structures and processes impact individuals. To this end, your final paper for the course is a 6-8 page autobiography, which will tell the story of something meaningful that has happened in your life. You will need to write about this experience through the lens of sociology and following the basic structure of a “what I have learned in this course”. Note: this is not just a personal story but a story that discusses and analyzes a private problem or experience (sad or happy) and how it is linked to public issues (e.g., culture, social structure, and/or systems of inequality). In so doing, in addition to the required reading, you must read at least 3 additional readings (e.g., scholarly articles) and incorporate their content into the personal experiences you discuss. You should also apply one or more of the theories we learned in the class to your life experience in a thoughtful way. The paper should be written in the first person. Papers will be graded on both content and writing, according to the extent that they demonstrate both a high level command of the material and a capacity to synthesize or generate creative insights. Times New Roman 12 pt. type. Papers should have the title and author’s name inserted in a header. All papers require a bibliography. Margins should be 1 inch. Only ASA or APA styles are acceptable.
