The Celebrity Machine
This article, published in 2003, looks at popular culture in post-war America and the rise of 'the cult of celebrity'. Comparing the journey to stardom for two artists, Andy Warhol and Elvis Presley, the article explores the degree to which the social and politcal movements of the time fueled their popularity and also, to what degree they influenced the social fabric of the day. Both Elvis and Andy emerged in an America which was a changing cultural landscape. The youth of the day were becoming highly influential and were a powerful market audience with new spending power. However, each rode this wave in a completely different manner. To a degree, Elvis was subjected to it, whereas Andy made it his subject.
