SMTP expert needed to fix SQL email issue

We have configured Email option from SQL server, using our SMTP server. How ever the database email is working only for emails sent to email addresses in the same domain. Emails are not relayed to external domains. The SQL guy is saying that this could be due to a restricition in the SMTP settings, that the SQL server IP address is not configured to allow relaying emails to external domains. I need an SMTP expert to verify this and fix the problem.
