Using the Chapter 12 – 3D Thin Shell AnalysisView in a new window tutorial from “Introduction to Finite Element Analysis Using SolidWorks Simulation 2012” by R.H. Shih as a guide, design a pressure vessel big enough to hold EXACTLY 15-kg of R-134a refrigerant as a saturated liquid at 20-C. Use Alloy Steel as your material and a diameter of 0.2-m; your tank should be the same shape as the one in the tutorial. You do NOT have to model the whole tank, just the section illustrated in the tutorial.
Once you have calculated the dimensions of your pressure vessel, use the simulation software to analyze the factor of safety in the pressure tank for various wall thickness values. The wall should be a minimum thickness but still be able to withstand the pressure from the material with a minimum factor of safety of 4.0. Create a plot of wall thickness vs. factor of safety. Use this plot to determine the minimum wall thickness required. You can assume the relationship is linear and interpolate the value.
Your company also manufactures safety valves for pressure tanks so that they will not rupture. Using the minimum wall thickness, determine the pressure required to lower the factor of safety to 2.0. Create a plot of pressure vs. Factor of Safety. Use this plot to determine the max pressure the vessel can withstand without going below FoS of 2.0. You can assume the relationship is linear and interpolate the value. At what temperature will this occur?
Create a report summarizing your design.
Show the following calculations in your report:
The volume required to hold the material
Dimensions for your tank
Any interpolations performed
Include the following figures in your report
Dimensions of your tank section.
Factor of safety plot for your minimum wall thickness at the T=20-C condition
Factor of safety plot for your mininum wall thickness at the P=P-max condition
Scatter Plot of wall thickness vs. Factor of Safety at the initial pressure (in Excel)
Scatter Plot of pressure vs. Factor of Safety at the minimum wall thickness (in Excel)
Answer the following questions:
What is the minimum thickness required for your wall?
What is the maximum pressure the vessel can reach before the Factor of Safety goes below 2.0?
What temperature will the tank be able to reach before the pressure exceeds the 2.0 Factor of Safety with the minimum wall thickness?
Along with your word document, include the SolidWorks file you used for analysis.
