Whereas liberalism, nationalism, conservativism, socialism, and even the idea of modern democracy emerged in the wake of the French Revolution in the 19th century, fascism is the only truly new political ideology of the 20th century. (Communism, it could be argued, is also a 20th century phenomenon but it comes distinctly out of the socialist tradition whereas fascism vehemently rejected socialism and all the other political ideologies listed above). Fascism emerged in Italy and in Germany in the wake of World War I. In this paper you will be analyzing the political ideology of fascism by comparing the words of its most famous practitioners: Benito Mussolini and Adolf Hitler. You will be tackling two main questions and using Mussolini’s The Doctrine of Fascism (1932) and Hitler’s Mein Kampf (1924) to support your answers. You may also use Hitler's speeches in Triumph of the Will (Links to an external site.) the was posted in last week's Easter Egg. (Note, please go to Threaded Discussion 8 and find the Easter egg for the excerpts you should watch if you want to use this). 1. What is fascism and what is new about it according to Hitler and Mussolini? That is how were they defining what they argued was a NEW ideology? What makes it a distinct political ideology? Think about also why both Nazism and Italian Fascism considered types of fascism. What brings them together? (Use the documents to support/argue). 2. How are they in dialogue with and rejecting existing political ideologies? (Eg. Locke, Rousseau, Engels, Lenin) 3. How and why are the Italian and German variants of fascism distinct (different)? As always, you must have an analytical thesis in your introduction—that is your argument must be stated which is the answer to the questions posed. Do not use or cite outside sources. I want your analysis of the documents Mein Kampf and the Doctrine of Fascism and (optional) the film Triumph of the Will. You must use both documents. If you learn about fascism from my lecture and/or the textbook, which of course you should, you do not need to cite factual information there. You can assume it is "common knowledge." Rather, analyze the actual documents/film. Your paper should be 3-4 pages, standard formatting (double-spaced, 1-inch margins, a font like Times New Roman and not Courier). Also, one last thing. I know a lot of commentators have been using the word "fascism" recently in reference, ummmm, current politics. And that is fine and you can come to your own conclusions about what is happening with the current election aftermath. But this is NOT a paper on the Election of 2020 or anyone else in this century. You are analyzing documents from the 1920s and 1930s to understand INTERWAR EUROPEAN FASCISM. Your arguments and conclusions must be about that.
