Greetings from Portugal! I am a highly experienced C++ programmer with more than 20 years in the field. I have worked extensively with 3d graphics, audio, game, educational, and database oriented software, with clients including Microsoft, Turner Broadcasting, and Dun & Bradstreet. Your project is quite interesting, and straightforward enough. In terms of feasibility, the only issue is indeed, how to measure how much light is in the picture. The simple approach is to add all the values of each pixel and divide by the total number of pixels. This gives you an average luminosity in the image. This does not however, compensate for "dark objects" such as a mountain or a building. I think the thing to do would be to detect edges in the image, and exclude portions of the image from the luminosity average. I love do this kind of research!
