UPDATE: after rereading your project description again I can add a javascript function that will send the canvas to the PHP script on a web server and that will save the image. Is that what you need? Just having PHP function after the page is displayed does nothing by default because PHP scripts are executed on a web server (before sending content to a user), not in a web browser. Please provide the web page to see how your chart is generated. I believe it's created as SVG (it can be CANVAS HTML5 element as well) so my deliverables will be javascript functions and two related libraries that will: 1. Export SVG to a file (if your chart is created as SVG). 2. Export PNG (from canvas or SVG) to a file. You can have buttons for that or not, just calling functions in the (javascript) code.
