There are many factors when you are facing performance issue on your query. I am listing down some of the tips which needs to take into consideration before designing any of the query: 1. The design of the query should be based on the technology. like Oracle/MySQL reads data from right to left where SQL use left to right in where condition. So where condition is playing very crucial role to achieve better performance. 2. Your column sequence in your select statement should be in the same order which you have in your indexes. 3. Most filtered condition should come first in the query. 4. Base table should be used first in your from clause and then rest based on the use of the columns in select statement. 5. Query should be splitted into small pieces if indexes are not calling and we are not allowed to alter our indexes. 6. Estimated and Actual plan of the query will help to tune the index. 7. Your index de-fragmentation should be scheduled on daily basis or as per your need. At least you have to do this defragmentation when there are major update and delete happens in your database. 8. You can create Indexed View if you are using OLAP database. There are many more things which we have to keep in consideration while designing of the query. My Technical expertize.
