I am retired now as a professional in the field of Agronomy with a Master of Sciences Degree at the University of Florida, Gainesville, FL, USA. I worked 30 years at the USDA-ARS as a Scientist and Laboratory Director. I published more than 50 scientific papers and gave a number of talks in international meetings around the world. Extended Geographical Distribution and Host Range of the Cactus Moth in Argentina

A field exploration was conducted to confirm the southern distribution of Cactoblastis cactorum in Argentina. The distribution of the moth found to be extended to the south (40° 10´S) and west (66° 56´W). The native species Opuntia penicilligera was recorded as a host for the first time. These findings should be useful in improving bioclimatic models to predict the potential geographic range of C. cactorum in North America.

Fire Ants Solenopsis spp. and Their Natural Enemies in Southern South America

We review the fire ant research to find natural enemies in S. America and evaluate their suitability for field release as biological control agents. Ecological and biological information is reported. The biology, abundance, distribution, detrimental effect, field persistence, specificity, and phenology are discussed. We conclude that the studies served to encourage further investigations in the US and advanced the implementation of biological control programs of imported fire ants.
