Instructions:
1. Composition Analysis:
Analyse the composition of the PHOTOS according to the framework introduced in Lecture 3 and in the reading by Bednarek and Caple 2012 (Chapter 7: Balancing Act: image composition).
2. News Values Analysis:
Analyse the photos, captions, headlines, and verbal story texts for their construal of news values (introduced in Lecture 2 and in the reading by Bednarek and Caple 2012 (Chapter 3: News Values)).
3. Intersemiotic Relations Analysis:
Examine the intersemiotic relations that hold between the photos, captions, headlines and story texts that accompany these news images (refer to Bednarek and Caple 2012 – Chapter 5: Images in the News).
4. Interpretation:
Interpret the findings for image composition, news values and intersemiosis analysis in relation to the assessment task as above and by referring to target audience, communicative and socio-historical contexts of the news institutions under discussion. Why do you think these publications used photos in this way? Are they successful in achieving their goals in the telling of this story? Could the story be improved in its use of visuals or other interactive elements? (see Bednarek and Caple Chapter 2: News Discourse in Context, and the journal article ‘Value Added’, Bednarek and Caple 2012b)
