Create API LOGIN functionality for Laravel based site and .NET framework site to Wordpress site

I am interested in getting the details of this project - I understand what needs to be done in general, but how is the user identified via the API, by user ID, by email, or something else. It is simple to create the API endpoint which can set the cookie for the calling user, this has the requirement that the API request is called from the user's browser. If that won't work, it may be necessary to redirect the user to WP and then redirect them back to wherever they were before. There are many possible solutions, but I would need to discuss this to determine which is best.
