What is MSO (Mobile Sailing Optimizer) ? When you have to tack or jib to reach your target because the wind does not permit you to go straight to the target, you must choose a tacking direction. For a very tight tack, close to the wind, the will navigate the shortest path, but generally, you will go slower. If you choose a wider tack, more angle to the wind, you can be faster, but you will run a longer path. Which will be the best compromise? Which is the best course? MSO will calculate the best course for you in a snap. If you entered in the page "boat parameters" correct values for your boat and for the sailing set you are using, MSO will calculate the best course you have to follow to reach your target in the minimum possible time-frame. Please note that MSO is, obviously the best tool for races. If you race with your boat, MSO will let you run your boat at his best. Enjoy MSO ! Some terminology Natural wind is the wind independent from the boat moving. Apparent wind is the wind due to the boat moving regardless of the natural wind. Total wind is the vectorial (speed and direction) sum of the natural and apparent winds. Wind to the boat (WTB), is the natural wind as seen by the boat orientation both in strength and direction; ex: if the natural wind is from 70 degrees and the boat is heading 100 degrees the WTB is at 30 degrees. If the boat is at 120 and natural wind at 150 , the WTB is at 30 degrees. General Instructions Before even entering the MSO App, the user must prepare the boat parameters tables. These parameters are usually referred as polar coordinates. They are the response of a sail boat, for a given sail setting, to the natural wind. The user has to have a table indicating for a given (any reasonable, say in between 10 and 30 knots) strength of the natural wind, the speed of the boat for any angle, at steps of 10 degrees, of the WTB. If the boat is symetric (very rare case) the values can be just in between 0 and 180, otherwise they must go till 360. Any sailor will know that a high degree of accuracy is not required in the determining the WTB. The user can have (as advisable) several tables of this kind, one for every different sail settings. Once the user has these tables on hand he can run the MSO App. Boat parameters First of all he must run the option "boat parameter". In this page, following the App indications, he will fill up, and name, as many files/tables as he prepared before. He must indicate, for every set, the speed of the natural wind he had when he measured the parameters. Then the App will indicate all the WTB options one after the other, and for each one the App will expect the user to write the corresponding boat speed. When the loop will be over (36 values for 10 degrees each i.e 360 degrees) the user must enter a name for the corresponding sail setting. Further the user can go to the RUN page, either enter another setting. Another sailing setting can be added any time. Using the option "file manager" in the main menu, setting can be deleted, copied, shared. RUN At the entrance in this page you must 1. Select the table/file setting corresponding to the sail set you are using 2. Input either a way point either the bearing you want to go 3. The speed and the direction of the actual natural wind Then just tap GO and MSO will give you the best course to reach the target in the minimum time.
