Make a text file with a list of all equity symbols listed on a given region of the New York Stock Exchange. The information can be retrieved starting at the following link: <[login to view URL]>.
There are several regions:
United States
Canada
Carribean / Bermuda / Puerto Rico
Latin America
Middle East / Africa
Europe
Asia / Pacific
Make a Python function like this:
def getNYSESyms(dest, regions):
dest is the destination file to store the symbols, each symbol is separated by a newline. For exaple:
sym1
sym2
sym3
...
region is one of the regions listed above, as a string:
"united states"
"canada"
"carribian / bermuda / puerto rico"
"latin america"
"middle east / africa'
'asia / pacific"
sample use:
getNYSESyms(“[login to view URL]?, “united states??)

American Stock Exchange
Getting AMEX symbols are easier. There is just one file to download. Go to [[login to view URL]][1], then on the left click "Equities" then "Listed Companies" then "Company Description." In the page that appears near the bottom you will see a link "Click here to download the list of all Amex listed equities." Note that the file this link points to each day changes to reflect the date!!! So you will have to go to this page first, then discover the name of the link, then download the file.
Function format:
def getAMEXSyms(dest)
Where dest is symbol destination file.
